Dorothy May (Booth) Mays, age 100 of Dayton, IN, died at 11:35 A.M. on Friday, May 27, 2016 at her residence.
Born in Liberty Township, Warren County, IN on March 26, 1916, daughter of the late James W. and Alice (Horn) Booth, she had resided in Dayton, IN since 1944. She graduated from Williamsport High School in 1934 and was also educated at the Indiana Central College, which is now the University of Indianapolis, Manchester College and University of Wisconsin. She married Glenn W. Mays on April 4, 1941. He preceded her in death on November 21, 2007. She was an elementary school teacher for 30 years teaching in Warren County, Nobel County, Clinton County and 24 of those years for Tippecanoe County. She also taught at Lafayette Baptist and did chapel for Highland Christian School for many years.
Dorothy loved to write letters. She also made flower arrangements and crafts from silk flowers selling them out of her home. She gave many lectures on birds and was an avid doll collector. Dorothy was a member of the Kossuth Street Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Bible Study Group. She was also a volunteer at Home Hospital.
Surviving are, 2 sons, Bob Mays (wife: Roberta) of Smyrna, TN and Rick Mays of Dayton, IN and daughter-in-law, Marcella Mays of Brownsburg, IN. Also surviving are 4 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Dorothy was preceded in death by 1 brother, James Booth, 1 sister, Leota Pence, and her eldest son, David Lee Mays.
Visitation will be at Kossuth St. Baptist Church, 29th and Kossuth Street in Lafayette on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until service time at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Mundy officiating. Interment will be at Dayton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kossuth St. Baptist Church Missions Fund.
