Martha Jane Jernagan, 65, Williamsport, passed away Friday, Sept. 30, 2011 at 6:05 a.m. at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.
She was born in Crawfordsville on June 14, 1946, the daughter of Martha Louise and Ira Junior VanHook.
Jane attended Logan Township School until 8th grade when she moved to Warren County. She was a 1964 graduate of Seeger High School. She married Jake Jernagan on Sept. 27, 1969 and he survives.
Jane spent most of her working life in the newspaper business, working first for the Ledger Tribune in Attica and then spending more than three decades with the Review Republican. She served as the newspaper’s editor at the time of her death.
She was a member of the Williamsport Christian Church and the Wild Roses of Williamsport Red Hat Society (where she was known as “Lady Ace of Diamonds“). She bowled on the Monday night Women’s League at Shawnee Lanes in Attica and served under four different sheriffs on the Warren County Sheriffs Merit Board.
She is survived by her husband Jake; sons Sean Jernagan of Williamsport and Jared Jernagan and wife Nicole of Greencastle; four grandchildren, Jacob, Kayce and Ella Jernagan of Williamsport and Miles Jernagan of Greencastle; mother Martha VanHook of West Lebanon; brother John VanHook and wife Judi of West Lebanon; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Monday, October 3, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Williamsport Christian Church. Services will be at the church on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Don Williams and Jesse Stoner officiating and a Red Hat Society presentation at the beginning of the service. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery in Williamsport. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
