Glenn W. Mays, age 92 of Dayton, IN, died at 9:35 A.M. on Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at his residence.
Born in Brookston on January 6, 1915, son of the late Bernie and Blanche Mays, he was a life resident of this area. He graduated from Mulberry High School in 1932. He studied Dairy manufacturing at Purdue University and worked in Chicago and Peoria at ice cream plants. He married Dorothy Booth from Warren County in 1941. They celebrated their 66th anniversary April 4, 2007. She survives.
In 1941, he left Indiana Refining Co. and worked at Alcoa in Lafayette from 1941-1976 as a cost clerk in the accounting department. He had a business on the side, “Mays Repair Service”, repairing lawn mowers, small motors and automobiles. From time to time, after work he helped his dad with farming and bookkeeping for his brother at Cities Service. Other side avocations were installing 2 bathrooms, changing plumbing, adding a room on a house and remodeling.
After retiring, he worked at Kossuth St. Baptist Church, where he had been an active member. He was Treasurer and General Business Manager for a number of years. He also served as a teacher and several terms as deacon.
Surviving with his wife are, 3 sons, David Mays (wife: Marcy) of Brownsburg, IN; Bob Mays (wife: Roberta) of Nashville, TN; and Rick Mays of Dayton, IN; 2 sisters, Beulah Elliott of Frankfort and Helen Whitis of Brownsburg; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Glenn was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Leland and Noel Mays, and 1 sister, Alberta Rohrman.
Visitation will be at Kossuth St. Baptist Church, 29th and Kossuth Street in Lafayette on Sunday, November 25, 2007 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held there on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastors Don Whipple and Bob Mundy officiating. Interment will be at Dayton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Kossuth St. Baptist Church.
