Vera M. Fitzwater

Vera M. (Stump) Fitzwater, age 86 of West Lebanon, IN, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 1:28 A.M. EST at Home Hospital in Lafayette, IN with her family by her side. She was born on August 19, 1921, the daughter of Ernest and Genevieve (Hill) Stump. She married Lloyd Fitzwater on December 27, 1939 in Williamsport, and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage together. He survives. Retired from the Continental Telephone Co. in Rossville, IL, Vera was a housewife and loved every aspect of life on the farm including gardening and flowers. She was known for her cooking, especially pies and chicken & noodles. Her pets always held a special place in her heart. Noted for her sense of humor, she enjoyed telling stories and, in years past, acting in skits. She was compassionate and always willing to lend a hand to her friends. Vera graduated from Rossville High School in 1939 and had been a member of the Rossville Church of Christ since 1944; she was active in the West Lebanon Women’s Club and served as the President for several terms. Surviving with her husband, Lloyd, are, daughter, Mary Lou (John) Mauck of West Lebanon, IN; granddaughter, Gwen Smith of Bellbrook, OH; grandson, Brian Garbacz (fiancée: Janine Guay) of Jacksonville, FL; and great-grandson, Tyler Smith. Vera was preceded in death by her parents. Per her wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral graveside services will be on Friday, February 1, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. CST (Illinois time) at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville, IL. Officiating will be Minister Fred Sigle. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials may be made to Illini Children’s Home at St. Joseph, IL or the Rossville Church of Christ, Rossville, IL.
