Richard H. “Tuffy” Van Leer, age 83 of Williamsport, IN and longtime resident of Marshfield, IN, died at 6:56 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Tuffy was born on November 14, 1930. He was the son of Jessie and Nellie (Roderick) Van Leer. He attended Marshfield Schools and married Annetta L. Hoskins on July 31, 1955 near Johnsonville, IN. She survives. Tuffy was a lifelong resident of Warren County, IN. He worked and Norfolk and Southern Railroad for 10 years, the grain elevator in Marshfield, IN, Prouty Factory in Danville, IL, and for Esco for 23 ½ years retiring in 1986.
Tuffy attended West Lebanon Church of the Nazarene. He loved to laugh and smile, fully enjoying life. He was the quite the prankster. Tuffy enjoyed mushrooming and fishing. He loved his children and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and his wife, Annetta, were inseparable.
Surviving are, 3 children, Nancy Jane Van Leer of Williamsport, IN, Laurie Ann Van Leer-Sturgeon of Perrysville, IN, and Harold Wayne Van Leer of Williamsport, IN; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Tuffy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Francis, Elton, Herbert, Howard, and Merle Van Leer, and great-granddaughter, Autumn Star.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in West Lebanon, IN on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be there on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jeff Allen officiating. Interment will follow at West Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
