Harold R. “Harry” Stitt, age 78 of Williamsport, died on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at his residence.
Harry was born on November 14, 1929 to Ross and Hazel (Cole) Stitt in Warren County, Indiana. He attended Judyville grade school and graduated from Williamsport High School in 1947. Harry attended Ball State University and pledged to Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity. Mr. Stitt married Barbara Joan Bolser on July 3, 1954 and she preceded him in death on November 23, 1990.
Harry moved to Kokomo, IN in 1947 and moved back to Williamsport in 1997. He began his professional career as a stock boy at Delco Radio, General Motors and retired as an industrial relations manager in 1985. While in Kokomo he played industrial league softball and basketball. He was active in Little League baseball and cancer fund drives.
Harry served during the Korean Conflict in the 3rd Army Infantry Division and achieved the rank of sergeant. Harry was Past Commander of the American Legion Post #259 in Williamsport. He was a member of the following organizations: life member of VFW Post #3318 in Attica, Voiture 40 E.T. 8 Locale 1103 in Kokomo, Pine Village Lodge #315 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and Eagles #2596 in Attica. He enjoyed all sports but especially baseball, basketball and fishing. Harry loved playing euchre, taking trips to Las Vegas, and spending part of the winter in Florida. Mr. Stitt was baptized into the Williamsport Christian Church in 1943.
Mr. Stitt is survived by three daughters, Joni Jackson (Dan) and Vanessa Young, both of West Chester, OH and Sandra Norrie (George) of Palmer, MA, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He also had his special friends and neighbors who he enjoyed spending time with, Joe and Melody DePugh of Williamsport
Harry was preceded in death by one sister, Florence Kaserman and two brothers, Robert Stitt and Delbert Stitt.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home on Friday, August 15, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. EDT until the time of graveside memorial service time of 2:00 p.m. EDT with Minister Gary Johnson, from Sterling Christian Church, officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery with full military rites. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
