Lavene Davis, 97, of Williamsport, Ind. went to be with the Lord at 10:55 a.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at I.U. Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Ind. after a brief stay.
Lavene was born in Prairie Township, Warren County, Ind. on December 21, 1918 to Roscoe L. and Carrie L. (Marcum) Flynn. She graduated from Ambia High School in 1936 and married the late Harold Davis on January 21, 1937, who preceded her in death on October 30, 1996. She raised and nurtured four children, took them to Ambia Methodist Church every Sunday, provided them with music lessons and instruments, helped them with 4-H projects, and taught her daughters’ homemaking skills.
She worked as bookkeeper for Prairie Township when Harold was Trustee; served as Vice-Committeewoman of the Township, Vice- Chairwoman of Warren County Republican Committee; active in Warren County Republican Women’s Club, Federated Women’s Club, Farm Bureau, United Methodist Women, and served as Treasurer of Williamsport United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her monthly lunches with the Unique Club.
In Warren County government, Lavene was Deputy Auditor and Auditor, Legal Secretary for the Prosecuting Attorney, and Deputy Surveyor. She received numerous awards for her service, including Women in Government Award from Governor Otis Bowen , Local Government Achievement Award from U.S. Congressman John Myers, Sagamore of the Wabash Awards from Governor Bowen and Governor Robert Orr, Ronald Reagan Service Award, and the Ernie Community Service Award. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Captain Henry Vanderburgh Chapter, Evansville, Ind.
She is survived by her son Earl Davis (Judy) of rural Ambia, Ind.; daughters Judy Cooper (Scott) of rural Boswell, Ind.; Carolyn Hancock and Barbara Harris (Bob) both of Evansville, Ind; grandchildren Robert Davis (Catherine), Julie Smith (Steve), Michael Davis (Kris), Merry Peak, Sherry Dart (Ron), David Hancock (Robin), Anne Garrison, Gregory Cooper, Douglas Cooper (Penny), Jennifer Volpi (Joe), Brian Harris and Brent Harris; 28 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.
Lavene was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport, Ind. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 28, at Ambia United Methodist Church, 208 S. 3rd Street, Ambia, IN 47917 with Reverends Clint Fink and Charles B. Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Williamsport. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
