Gilbert E. “Buck” Barnett, age 73, missionary in Mexico, of Williamsport, died at 9:00 p.m. EDT, Friday April 10, 2009 at the Medical Center of Plano in Texas.
Gilbert was born in Frankfort, IN on September 15, 1935. He was the son of George and Eva (Crandall) Barnett. Gilbert was a graduate from Elsinore Union High School in California and received an associate’s degree from San Bernardino Valley College. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Glenda Brady on September 9, 1956 in Elsinore, CA. She survives. Gilbert lived in Lafayette, IN, Elsinore, CA, moving back to Lafayette and has been a resident of Williamsport since 1977. Since 1988 he and his wife have been in the mission fields of Mexico and the Philippines.
Gilbert worked as an instrument specialist at Tee Pak in Danville, IL for 9 ½ years. He was a member of the Church of Living Water. He was also a member of the American Legion and a Boy Scout leader for Troop 108, which included his sons, in San Bernardino. Their missionary work supported 13 soup kitchens in Mexico, 17 soup kitchens in the Philippines, and a Bible College in the Philippines. Gilbert was a baseball coach and enjoyed playing basketball, football, and swimming. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever he would meet someone he would always say “Do you know Jesus loves you and so do I?”
Surviving with his wife, Glenda, are, 4 sons, Mike Barnett (wife: Michelle) of Plano, TX, Gerald Barnett (wife: Teresa) of Williamsport, James Barnett (wife: Karla) of Williamsport, and David Barnett (wife: Linda) of Williamsport; brother-in-laws, Chuck Powell of Oklahoma and Barney McIntyre of Lafayette; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters, Juanita Warner, Esther Powell, and Virginia McIntyre.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Services will be at the Church of Living Water on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. EDT with Pastor David Wickens officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Living Water.
