James Lloyd York, age 86, of Williamsport, Indiana passed away at 4:35 p.m. on January 7, 2016 at Woodland Manor Nursing Center. He was born September 17, 1929 and raised on a farm north of Pence, Indiana. James Lloyd was the son of Lawrence and Gladys (Davan) York. He attended grade school at Pence and graduated from Williamsport High School.
James was honorably discharged as a Sergeant from the US Army after he was stationed in Korea with the Searchlight Company. Upon returning from Korea, he married Nancy Haupt, his High School sweetheart, on March 6, 1953, and she survives.
James and Nancy settled on their farm outside Williamsport in 1955 where he enjoyed farming for many years. He was well-known for repair and refurbishing golf clubs as well as his wood working skills, making over 300 jewelry boxes and trunks, of which many he gave away to family and friends.
James and Nancy enjoyed playing golf, specifically playing with their friends at Big Pine Golf Course. They traveled throughout the US and Europe, often playing golf along the way. He was a member of the American Legion Post #259 Williamsport.
Surviving with his wife, Nancy of nearly 63 years, are a daughter, Carol Wilhoite (Dan) of West Lafayette, and a son, Gary, of Williamsport. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Caitlin Wilhoite, of Indianapolis, and grandson, Christopher Wilhoite, of South Bend. Also surviving is a sister, Marge Peterson, of Williamsport, brothers, Tom York (Gloria) of Athens, Illinois, Jim York (Sharon) of Rossville, Illinois, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don York (Betty).
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Sunday, January 10, 2016 from noon until service time at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Charles B. Anderson officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery in Williamsport, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to the Warren County Community Foundation.
