Robert F. Spangler

Robert F. Spangler, age 82 of West Lebanon, died at 1:30 pm CDT on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at VA Medical Center in Danville, IL. Robert was born in West Lebanon, IN on December 24, 1926. He was the son of Perry and Thelma (Patterson) Spangler. He graduated from West Lebanon High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Charlene Zufall in 1947 and she preceded him in death. He later married Vernnia See on August 6, 1963 in West Lebanon and she preceded him in death on April 10, 2006. Robert was a farmer and also worked for Esco Corp. in Danville, IL for 18 years before retiring. He was a member of the West Lebanon Church of the Nazarene, VFW Post #3318 Attica, and the American Legion Post #259 in Williamsport. He enjoyed woodworking and made many cartoon characters. Surviving are, 3 sons, James L. Meek (wife: Deb) of Washington, Allen W. Spangler of Attica, and Carl R. Spangler of West Lebanon; 4 daughters, Nora J. Place of Danville, IL, Kathy L. Conn (husband: Jim) of Collinsville, IL, Judith M. Sorestad (husband: George) of Canada, and Patricia K. Roberts (husband: Robert) of Washington; granddaughter-in-law, Lori Meek of West Lebanon, that was married to his grandson that he raised, Michael Robert Meek; 2 sisters, Katherine Long (husband: Marvin) of Greencastle, IN and Betty Ray of Texas; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by an infant son, stepson, Arthur See, and grandson, Michael Meek. Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Friday, May 8, 2009 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm EDT. Services will be there in the chapel on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 1:00 pm EDT with Pastor Bob Trafford and Chaplain Cleveland Taylor officiating. Interment will be at West Lebanon Cemetery with full military honors.
