Pauline Gleta (Coon) Strickland

Pauline Gleta (Coon) Strickland, age 98 of Williamsport, died at 4:45 am EDT on Monday, June 1, 2009 at the St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital. Pauline was born near Hoopeston, IL July 29, 1910, the daughter of Ora and Belle Miles Coon. When she was seven years of age the family moved to a farm near Pence, IN. She was married to Ralph M. Strickland in Kentland, IN on January 23, 1932. He preceded her in death on December 30, 1974. Mrs. Strickland was a graduate of Ambia High School and Indiana State Teachers College. She taught in Jordan Township, Warren County schools. She was co-owner and manager, with her husband, of Strickland’s Food Market in Hedrick, IN for 22 years. In 1957 they moved to St. John, IN. She retired in 1975 as a Senior Analyst for Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. in Chicago. Mrs. Strickland was a member of Pence Jordan Chapel Church and the Order of Eastern Star West Lebanon Chapter #162. She was an avid tennis fan and played tennis in college. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are, son, Ronald M. Strickland (wife: Sharon) of Williamsport; 1 daughter, Bette Scherette of Williamsport; 5 grandchildren, Tony Strickland, Terri Strickland, Michelle Scherette, Renee’ Carns, and Tony Scherette; 6 great-grandchildren; 1 niece and 1 nephew. Pauline was preceded in death by 3 sisters, a great-grandson, and 1 nephew. Visitation will be at Pence Jordan Chapel Church on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 10:00 am EDT until service time at Noon with Rev. Cathy McCoy officiating. Interment will be at Jordan Cemetery in Pence, IN.
