Helen M. (High) Pollom Smith, age 95 of Brook, IN and longtime Warren County resident, died at 10:00 pm on Friday, July 3, 2009 at George Ade Memorial Healthcare in Brook, IN where she had been a resident since March 1993.
Helen was born on April 22, 1914 in Williamsport, IN. She was the daughter of Lettie T. High. She was raised by her grandparents, Charles & Jenny High. Helen was a Warren County resident most of her life moving to Kentland, IN in 1974. She married Jim Pollom and he preceded her in death in 1950. She later married Charles Smith and he also preceded her in death.
Helen was a housewife until her husband, Jim’s death in 1950. She then gave mud baths at the Mudlavia Hotel. She was also a cook at the Mudlavia Lodge and later at the Horn Restaurant in Kentland. She was a member of the Williamsport Christian Church. Helen loved spending time with her children and like being at home. She loved having company at her house. She also enjoyed spending time helping her elderly friends. She loved to cook and was a very good cook and always asked everyone to have something to eat. She collected recipe books and enjoyed her house plants. She did latch hook and had won some ribbons at the Newton County fair in recent years. She had dogs the last years in her home, which she loved and cared for as much as her children. Their names were Clem and Bandit.
Surviving are, 5 daughters, Mary Jo Lucas of Attica, IN, Peggy McCoskey (husband: Jerry) of Pine Village, IN, Marcia Carole Johnson (husband: Tim) of Paxton, IL, Penny Cahoe (husband: Bill) of Muncie, IN, Sherry Gardner (husband: Sean) of Gibson City, IL; 1 son, Bill Pollom (wife: Pat) of Milford, IL; 1 half-brother, Roy Vail of Williamsport, IN; 7 granddaughters and 9 grandsons, Frankie Lucas, Lisa Kennedy, Bruce Anderson, Rob Anderson, Nancy Mitton, Jane Fanning, Billie Pollom, Marcia Burke, Wayne Burke, Joe Cahoe, Chris Cahoe, Stacy McMillin, Christy McMillin, Danny Lane, Bobby Lane, and Scott McCoskey; 20 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by 2 sons, 1 sister, 2 brothers, and 2 grandsons.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 from noon until service time at 2:00 pm with Pastor Dave Keeton officiating. Interment will be at Rainsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jasper County Hospital Home Health Care and Hospice, 1104 East Grace Street, Rensselaer, IN 47978.
