Larry D. Mathews, age 64 of Williamsport, passed away at his home on Thursday, October 22, 2009.
Born March 1, 1945 in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Bert and Genevia (Courtney) Mathews and the husband of 32 years to Rebecca Rae (Stall) Mathews. They were married on October 16, 1977 at the Williamsport Christian Church officiated by the Reverend Charles B. Anderson.
Larry was a 1964 graduate of Seeger Memorial High School. He attended Indiana State University and was a member of the U.S. Air Force.
A resident of the Warren County area, he farmed most of his life near Hedrick with his father, brothers, and sons. He owned and operated Our Place Restaurant in Williamsport along with his wife for 13 ½ years. He served as a member of the M.S.D. of Warren County school board and was a bus driver for 30 years.
He was an active member of the Gao in Danville, IL, Eagles, the American Legion Post #259 Williamsport, VFW Post #3318 Attica, and the F & AM Lodge #352 West Lebanon. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid fan of the Purdue Boilermakers, Chicago Cubs, and Chicago Bears. He was a supporter of the Special Olympics and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are, 6 children, Carmen Bratton (husband: Edward) of Piqua, OH, Matthew Cawthon (wife: Hollie) of Lakewood, CO, Jodie Hunter (husband: Billy) of Jeffersonville, IN, Joshua Cawthon (wife: Kristen) of Mulberry, IN, Travis Mathews of Hedrick, IN and Todd Mathews (wife: Melissa) of Findlay, OH; 12 grandchildren, Renee, Eddie, Michael, Christopher, Carissa, Victoria, Catrina, Alex, Travis, Becca, Tobias Dean and Hailee; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Thomas (husband: Austin) of Williamsport; and 2 brothers, Donald Mathews of Attica, IN and Thomas Mathews of Williamsport. Larry was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Bob, Bill and Richard, and a granddaughter, Stephanie.
Friends and family may call at Seeger Memorial Fine Arts Center on Thursday, October 29, 2009 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm with Masonic and Eagle services at 7:45 pm. Services will also be held at the Fine Arts Center on Friday, October 30, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Charles B. Anderson officiating. The family has asked that all who wish, to come and share their favorite stories of Warren County’s “Uncle Lar.” The family also requests that family and friends dress casual and support Larry’s teams. “BOILER UP”. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Williamsport with full military honors.
