James Calvin Verden, age 71, of Covington died at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital.
James was born in Warren County, Indiana on December 9, 1938. He was the son of Rae Elvin and Mary Alice Brasker Verden.
James married Mazie K. Shellenberger on June 19, 1960 in Clay City, IN and they have resided in Covington since 1961.
James worked for General Motors in Tilton, IL until they closed the plant. He then worked as the custodian in Covington, IN for the First Baptist Christian School and the First Assembly of God Church.
James was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Covington, IN, where he served as a Deacon for 35 years as well as a greeter for 50 years. His life was his church and his family. James served several years as a volunteer at Provena United Samaritans Hospital in Danville, IL as a Red Vest.
Surviving with his wife, Mazie, are, 2 daughters, Conda Holland of Tampa, FL and Sharon Verden of Charlotte, NC; 1 son, Larry James Verden of Covington, IN; 1 brother, Rev. Fred Verden (wife: Caroline) of Angola, IN; 1 aunt, Mildred Verden of Marshfield, IN; 1 granddaughter, Kristen Harper (husband: Matt) of Slidell, LA; and 1 great-grandson, Micah Harper of Slidell, LA.
James was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Nila High, and uncle, Merle Verden.
Visitation will be at First Assembly of God Church, 421 Market Street, Covington, IN 47932 on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Services will be at the church on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 11:00 am with Pastors Mark McMinn and Bob Fairchild officiating. Interment will be at West Lebanon Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God Church or to the Verden family.
