Alfred “Curly” Armes, age 79 of West Lebanon, IN went back to the mountain at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.
Curly was born in Fork Mountain, TN on May 24, 1940. He was the son of Elbert and Elsie (Bunch) Armes and stepson of Virgil Liles. He was raised in TN attending Fork Mountain Schools then moved to Chicago, IL. He had lived in West Lebanon, IN since 1964. He married Alice Lorraine “Rennie” Kochell in Danville, IL and she preceded him in death on April 5, 2001. He later married Sheila G. Maynard on November 19, 2004 and she survives.
Curly worked for Bohn Aluminum, later known as Heatcraft, in Danville, IL for 35 years retiring in 1999. He enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and birdhouses. He liked raising flowers and had won awards at the fair. He also raised prizefighting roosters. He enjoyed writing songs and poetry. He loved watching his grandkids play baseball and was a great cook, enjoying cooking for his grandkids. He was a good old mountain man.
Surviving with his wife, Sheila, are, children, Teresa Stitt (Jerry) of Williampsort, IN, Wade Armes (Beth) of Williamsport, IN, Josh Kelley of West Lebanon, IN, and Amber Starr Kelley of West Lebanon, IN; son-in-law, Jim Salts of West Lebanon, IN; siblings, Randall Armes of Florida and V.J. Liles of West Lebanon, IN; 8 grandchildren, Drew Van Etta, Ross Stitt, Zachary Stitt, Bailey Armes, Theran Armes, Brooke Delaney, Stephany Page Delaney, and Jamison Michael Delaney, Jr.; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Curly was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, wife, Alice “Rennie” Armes, daughter, Julie Salts, siblings, Reba Dixon, Nina Ricketts, Roland Armes, and Roy Armes.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Friday, May 31, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until service time at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor J. David Adams officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
