Charles E. “Charlie” Edwards Jr., age 72 of Carbondale, IN, passed away at 11:39 a.m. on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at Franciscan Health Lafayette East. Charlie was born on December 9, 1950 in Hammond, IN. He was the son of Charles Everett Edwards Sr. and Minnie Myrtle (Embry) Edwards. Charlie was raised in Gary before moving to the Carbondale area in 2002. He was a 1969 graduate of Calumet High School in Gary, IN. Charlie married Deborah Louise Schmal at the Black Oak Church of the Nazarene in Hammond, IN on June 7, 1986 and she survives. Charlie was a roofer, carpenter, and carpet layer. He also had worked as a supervisor at United States Gypsum in East Chicago, IN for many years. Charlie was a member of the Black Oak Fraternal Order of Eagles 2593 in Gary, IN and a member of the Attica VFW 3318. He was an avid hunter and loved planting trees. Charlie enjoyed exploring nature with his grandchildren as well as shooting and going on four-wheeler rides with them. Surviving with his wife, Debbie, are: 3 children, Marilea Plew, Charles Kevin Edwards, and Melissa Bruder (Art); 2 sisters, Linda Ball (Kenneth) and Kathy Gruszka (Dennis); 17 grandchildren, Chelsea Plew, Larry Plew, Lance Brown, Ashtin Stuckey (Zach), CJ Edwards, Charlene Edwards, Tripp Edwards, Greg Tigner, Samantha Edwards (companion: Joe Young), Sierra Risden, Zack Saunders, Zane Saunders, David Bruder, Matt Bruder, Dakota Bruder (Kayleigh), Tamara Bruder, Amarissa Bruder, and Abigail Bruder; 8 great-grandchildren, Brysen Baker, Addy Young, Kaydence Young, Josey Young, Colton Bruder, Benjamin Ray, Joshua Ray, Ava Sherrell, David Sherrell, and Lucas Sherrell Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Crystal Edwards. Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until service time at 5:00 p.m. with Charlie’s brother-in-law, Pastor Ken Ball officiating.
