Cherie Lee (Smith) Astell, age 74 of West Lebanon, IN went to be with the Lord at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Cherie was born in Homer, IL on August 19, 1943. She was the daughter of Alfred L. and Juanita (Knight) Smith. She grew up in Fairmount, IL attending schools there, later moving to Danville, IL where she was a 1961 graduate of Danville High School. She married Richard L. Astell on July 12, 1997 at the Southside Church of the Nazarene in Tilton, IL. They were the first couple to be married in the new church in a beautiful ceremony that Cherie had planned. She had always wanted a “real” wedding with the opportunity to wear a “real” wedding gown. Rich was more than willing to fulfill that dream. He survives. And they have resided in West Lebanon the past 20 years. Cherie was a longtime member of the Southside Church of the Nazarene in Tilton, IL but had recently attended the West Lebanon Christian Church. She was retired but had previously worked as a dental receptionist for Dr. Chantos and Dr. Cooney and also for Tee-Pak all in Danville, IL. Surviving with her husband, Richard, are, children, Candy Shaw Kloet (Jeff) of Henderson, KY, Lisa Shaw Carey (Brian) of Dana, IN, and Mark Samson (Helen) of Chatham, IL; step-children, Suzette Astell-Richardson (Matt) and Bret Astell (Cathy) both of Danville, IL; siblings, Ron Smith (Donnee) of Scherville, IN, Larry Smith (Lori) of Muncie, IL, and Luann Johnson (Kurt) of Westville, IL; grandchildren, Jared Smoot, Jordan Smoot (Olivia), Ben Percy (Jill), Will Percy (special friend: Andi), Austin Percy (fiancée: Melissa), Alex Percy (special friend: Jake), Delene Samson, Nicole Carey, Maggie Carey, Luke Phillips (Amy), Chris Phillips (Jody), Nicholas Pribble (Lacey), Ben Astell (Melissa) and Matt Astell; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.Cherie had many friends during her lifetime as she was loved by everyone. A very dear friend, Mary Jo Murphy, had the honor to sing at her wedding, which meant the world to her. Lifelong friends, Kay Donley and Coni Marble, shared many wonderful memories with Cherie during her lifetime. Tina Moody and Nancy Brown were close friends considered by Cherie to be “like her daughters”. Louisa Cole also become a good friend after Cherie’s move to West Lebanon. Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport, IN on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be there in the chapel on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with Minister Bruce Thornsbrough officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Lebanon Christian Church Building Fund.
