David Ray “Grumpy” Johnston, age 80 of Kramer, Indiana, passed away on Sunday October 16, 2022 at 11:10 p.m. at his home, surrounded by his loving family after a brief battle with cancer.
Grumpy was born on September 14, 1942 in Green Hill, IN. He was the son of Paul “Sue” Johnston and Mildred (Anderson) Johnston. Grumpy was a lifelong resident of Warren County. He was raised in Independence and Pine Village area until moving to Kramer on September 14, 1970. Grumpy was a 1961 graduate of Pine Village High School. Upon graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1967. Grumpy married Sara L. Haniford on August 25, 1967 at the Pine Village Christian Church and she survives.
Following his Air Force service, he became employed at Anheuser Bush (Staley) as a maintenance mechanic in July 1967 until his retirement on May 31, 1998.
Grumpy was a member of the VFW Post #3318 Attica. He was a current member of the Attica American Legion Post #52 and served as past commander of the Williamsport American Legion Post #259. Grumpy was a member of F&AM Pine Village #315 for 53 years and served as a past master. Grumpy was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom, ginseng, and coon hunting. After his retirement he enjoyed camping down by the river and on the family island.

1 brother, Sam Johnston (wife: Joyce) of West Lafayette, IN;
6 grandchildren, Anna Scott (husband: Reid), Daniel Johnston (wife: Erica), Isabella Johnston (fiancé: Matt Kroll), Quentin Johnston (fiancé: Meredith Carpenter), Mason Dean (fiancé: Linley Scutchfield), and Chandler Dean (wife: Macee);
5 great-grandchildren, Kyler, Kenan, and Nova Bradley and Remington and Maverick Scott;
Fred E. Dean whom he thought of like a son;
His beloved dog, Trumpy
Grumpy was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Gretchen Ranae Johnston Dean; and grandson, John David Bradley.
Grumpy was blessed to always have his children, family, and friends close by and he is now reunited with his daughter Gretchen.
Visitation will be held at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Saturday, October 22, 2022 from noon until masonic service time at 2:00 p.m. and a celebration of life to follow with Pastor Rob Robbins officiating.
