Don P. Campbell, age 84 of Covington, IN passed away surrounded by his loving family at 5:54 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2022. Don was born on July 6, 1938 in Madison, IN. He was the son of Virgil Bear Campbell and Elizabeth Christie Campbell. Don was raised in Madison, IN until attending DePauw University in Greencastle. He was a 1956 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School. Don received his Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1960 and later graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 1963. After graduation from IU he lived briefly in Idaho where he served as a clerk for the Supreme Court Justice. He moved to Covington, IN and had resided there since. Don married Shirley Louise Alexander on November 1, 1983 in Danville, IL and she survives. Don was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1964 along with admission to U.S. District Courts in Indiana and Illinois. He was admitted to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in 1972. Don served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney under James Bunch. He was a member of the Indiana Bar Association and the Fountain County Bar Association since 1964. He served on the board of directors for the Indiana Bar Association and was a past president and vice president of the Fountain County Bar Association. Don was also a member of Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. He was voted Best Lawyer in the State of Indiana in the 1980s and was awarded by Women in Law for his supports and promotion of women. When asked what kind of lawyer he was, he was fond of saying “a damn good one.” Don was a member of the Covington United Methodist Church and the F&AM Fountain Lodge #60. He was a published author. Don loved watching IU Basketball and enjoyed golfing, writing, and skiing. He always looked forward to family ski trips. Don enjoyed bicycling and participated in BAMMI, a 500-mile bike trip he took during several summers. Surviving with his wife, Shirley, are, Daughters, Dawn C. Campbell of Covington, IN, Jodi B. Campbell of Terre Haute, IN, Susan D. McDaniel (Douglas) of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Penny Van Vactor of Williamsport, IN, and Brooke Chavez of Williamsport, IN; Brother, James Campbell (Linda) of Ft. Myers, FL; Sisters, Diane Michele Carpenter of Madison, IN and Karen Mathis (Everett) of Madison, IN; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren Many nieces and nephews Don was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Eulena V. Campbell; his first wife, Carol Ann Holt; step-daughter, Hellen M. Leak; grandson, Nikolas “Nik” Schechter; nephew, Jonathan Brandon; and son-in-law, Eric N. Van Vactor. Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport conducted services. Private graveside services were held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington with John Schambach and Jon Beardsley officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Western Indiana Community Foundation in Covington.
