Heaven has a new angel in its choir today. Hilda was born on November 18, 1939 in Naomi, Kentucky to Lowell and Glenna Floyd Tarter, who preceded her in death. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the tender age of 9 and she has been a devoted believer of Christ throughout her life. She attended school at Nancy, Kentucky until her family moved to Boswell, Indiana in 1956 when she was 17. She graduated from Boswell High School in 1957. Hilda married the love of her life, Donald “Dean” Johnson, on June 15, 1958. Dean left this earth for his heavenly home on January 2, 2012. Hilda is survived by her sons, Ty Johnson of Columbus, Indiana, Monte Johnson of Williamsport, Indiana and her daughter, Gina (Mark) Duffey of Zionsville, Indiana; her grandsons, Nolan (Kacie) Duffey and C.J. Duffey and her granddaughters Kristen and Maret Duffey, and Madelin Johnson. Also surviving are her sisters Kate Ford and Chris Dailey; sisters-in-law, Margene Anderson and Karen Tarter. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, two aunts and many wonderful friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Tarter, nephew, Terry Johnson, brothers-in-law, Gordon Johnson, Carter Dailey, Donald Barker, Ronald Ford, and George Houmes; and her sister-in-law, Dolee Johnson Barker Houmes. Hilda had been a member of the Williamsport Christian Church since 1968: she was a Sunday School teacher for the 3rdGrade Livewire class for numerous years, participant with Women’s Bible Study, Adult Church Choir, Gardener/Flower bed keeper at the church, and a volunteer with many funeral and church dinners. After being a stay-at-home mom for 25 years, Hilda worked at her husband Dean’s business, Johnson Tee Vee, for 20 plus years until they both retired. She was a volunteer for many years at the St. Vincent Hospital Gift Shop in Williamsport. Hilda enjoyed cooking and sharing food with her family, friends and neighbors. She loved tending to her huge vegetable garden and numerous flower beds, sewing, genealogy, making strawberry preserves and freezing corn. She was an avid walker and had many ‘walker’ friends over the years. Hilda was a Big Ten basketball fan (especially the Purdue Boilermakers) and she always looked forward to March Madness. Thanks to her Kentucky roots, Bluegrass music has always been her favorite. She was a loyal fan of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Her children and grandchildren were her joy and she was so proud of all of their accomplishments. She always reminded her grandchildren to make good choices. The visitation and funeral will be held at the Williamsport Christian Church on Monday, December 28, 2020. Visitation from 11:00am-1:00pm with funeral immediately following with son-in-law Mark Duffey officiating. The service will also be live-streamed and can be viewed by searching Williamsport Christian Church on YouTube. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, Williamsport, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hanging Rock Christian Assembly. Funeral arrangements are with Grady Funeral Home.
