James "Jim" Joseph Hegg

December 30, 1937 — April 27, 2023

James Joseph "Jim" Hegg, 85 of West Lebanon, IN,  passed away on Thursday, April 27th, 2023 at 8:08 AM in Williamsport, IN.

Born on December 30th, 1937 at home in Covington, IN, he was the second  son and 4th out of 5 children of Joseph Vernon David and Opal (Boughner) Hegg.

Jim grew up in Vermillion County, graduating from Perrysville High School in 1955.  He graduated in 1959 from Indiana Central College (now University of  Indianapolis)
with a Bachelors of Arts degree in education.

During a 44 year career, he taught in several schools, the longest tenured at Seeger High School for 13 years. He taught history, social studies and government and was a guidance counselor and served as a baseball coach for Seeger.  He then became a Principal at Attica High School, leading that institution after a fire in 1974 destroyed the school.  He worked hard to make sure his students had classes in portable classrooms and worked with the administration of Seeger High School and National Guard armory to secure gym facilities for Attica basketball games during a 3 year period of time.  Jim was also a Principal at North Newton High School, Westville (Illinois) High School and North Vermillion High School and completed his career at Linton-Stockton High School.  During his career as an educator he earned his Masters of Arts and Doctorate degrees at Indiana State University.

In 1959, Jim met the love of his life, Maureen Kelly and they were married on June 4th, 1960.   They enjoyed 59 years together before Maureen passed away on July 20th, 2019.

Jim enjoyed  working outside his home and was an avid IU fan of all sports especially basketball.  Jim's greatest love was his family as he enjoyed being a husband, father and grandpa/pampaw. He was so proud and happy of his children and grandchildren's accomplishments and he never missed a sporting or band event while his daughter and sons were in high school, and this after a daily 130-mile roundtrip from work.

He loved being a teacher and coach "I wouldn't give a plug nickel for a kid who wasn't a little bit ornery!" and was proud of all his students, making a point to keep in touch with several former students.  He was a reserved gentleman with a dry sense of humor but would easily laugh at that which tickled him.

He was active in his community, serving 2 terms as a County Councilman in Warren County, IN and was a coach of Farm and Little League baseball.  He was a lifelong railroad enthusiast and worked during summer breaks from teaching as a member of a track crew for the Norfolk & Western Railroad.

Jim is survived by daughter Tracy Hegg Davis of Danville, IN,  sons John Joseph Hegg (Dr. April J.) of Rainsville, IN, Michael Patrick Hegg (Lisa) of Indianapolis, IN , and James David Hegg of West Lebanon, IN; granddaughter Katie Nicole Davis of Danville, IN, grandsons Dr. Charles William Alexander "Alex" Hegg (Nicole Yoder) of LaGrange, IN, Patrick Joseph Hegg (Lilly Schierloh) of Poynette WI, Jacob Tyler Davis of Champaign -Urbana, IL,  and Joseph Vernon David Hegg of Carmel, IN; and brother-in-law John "Jack" McBride.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife Maureen, both parents, sisters Doris Hegg, Eleanor Hegg Cossey, Carole Hegg McBride, brother John Hegg and brothers-in-laws Robert Cossey, Harold Bott and John R. Boyd.
