Julia (McCabe) Poor, age 84 of Williamsport, IN, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2023 at Ascension St. Vincent Williamsport, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Julia was born on March 27, 1938 in Danville, IL. She was the daughter of Edward L. and Florence L. (Flanders) McCabe. Julia was a 1956 graduate of Williamsport High School. She went on to receive her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in 1965 and later her master’s degree from Indiana State University in 1971. Julia married David H. Poor on October 23, 1968 at the Hickman Heights Christian Church and he survives.
Julia was a lifelong resident of Warren County and faithfully served her community. She taught at Kramer Grade School for 6 years, Warren Central Elementary for 7 years, and Williamsport Elementary for 37 years, from 1978 until her retirement in 2002.
Julia was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Women Teacher’s Society and Service. She was a board member of Williamsport Historic Church Preservation and the Williamsport/Washington Township Public Library committee where she was involved in building the new library. Julia was an advisory board member of the Friends of the Public Library and Learning Center of Warren County. She established the “Reading and Writing Fund” with the Warren County Community Foundation which serves to support reading and writing activities in the school and community. She made personal contributions and worked to solicit contributions. Julia received a Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 2002.
Julia was a member of the Tab Church of Christ and later the Williamsport Christian Church. She loved to travel.
Surviving with her husband, David, are:
4 sons, Mike Brown (Theresa), Dave Brown (Sheri), Scott Brown (Jacqueline), and Ryan Poor (Erin);
1 brother, James McCabe (Cindy);
8 grandchildren;
7 great-grandchildren
Julia was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of life will be held at Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport on Tuesday, February 21, 2023. Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.
