Lloyd Earl Chambers, age 88, of Covington, IN, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Fountain Springs in Covington.
Lloyd was born on June 10, 1936 in Marshfield, IN. He was the son of Cleon and Vivian (Cunningham) Chambers. Lloyd was a 1954 graduate of West Lebanon High School. He married the love of his life, Gretchen Mae Kenny on November 4, 1956 and she survives. Lloyd grew up in West Lebanon and helped his dad with delivering coal and ice with Chambers Coal Company. He started his 35 year career with Standard Oil first in West Lebanon before moving to Hillsboro in 1961. He owned Chambers Oil Company delivering fuel to many residents & farms throughout Fountain County. He helped Gretchen manage Kimball Pianos and Organs in Hillsboro for 13 years. He was her “delivery driver.” They got to enjoy many international trips through Kimball.
Throughout his life in Hillsboro and later, Covington, Lloyd loved driving a school bus for many kids. He also enjoyed driving a church bus for Maranatha Baptist Church. In his “retirement” years, he drove a tour bus for Lafayette Limo and Imperial Travel. He loved seeing new places and always made sure the bus could fit into even the tightest of places. His favorite was all the Branson trips with the many different travel groups. He enjoyed working as a referee for high school basketball games and tournaments. He could still call out a “foul” or “travel“ while watching basketball on TV. Lloyd was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Church. He helped start WFOF (90.3) Christian radio station while a member at First Baptist Church in Covington.
Surviving with his wife Gretchen are:
3 children, Craig E. Chambers (Granda) of Veedersburg, IN, Curt D. Chambers (Colleen) of Hillsboro, IN, and Cynthia R. Ferguson (Jeff) of Carmel, IN;
7 grandchildren, Jennifer St. Peter (Isaiah), Hollie Pavia (Diego), Bryan Chambers (Rhyann), Cristin Stephens, Cory Chambers, Stephen Ferguson (Elizabeth), and Megan Ferguson;
11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Leroy (Betty) Chambers, and his step father, Virgil Toney.
Visitation will be on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Maranatha Baptist Church, 1111 Harrison St, Covington, IN, 47932 from 1:00 p.m. until funeral service time at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Kenneth Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Maranatha Baptist Church or Covington Christian School.
