Marie Vonne (Fairchild) Layton

Marie Vonne (Fairchild) Layton, age 84 of Williamsport, IN, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, December 5, 2021.

 

Marie was born on July 5, 1937 in Danville, IL to McKinley and Rebecca Fairchild. She was married for 63 years to John Allen Layton.

 

John and Marie were parents of three children, Dr. John (Brenda) Layton of Lafayette, Sharon (Steve) Meinhart of Lafayette, and Anne (Brad) Taylor of Ft. Wayne. They have nine grandchildren; Craig (Lindsay) Meinhart of Muncie, Adam (Stephanie) Meinhart of Lafayette, Steffi (Mitch) Rencheck of Knoxville, TN, Matt (Mallory) Taylor, Sarah (Phil) Williams, Katie Taylor (fiancé: Francisco Nápoles), and Toby (Chloe) Taylor all of Ft. Wayne, Carrie (Adam) Kennedy of Lafayette, RJ (friend: Anna Hounsom) of Charleston, SC. John and Marie were blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, Caleb, Lucas, and Anna Meinhart, Maddie and Peyton Meinhart, Maura, Romy, and Oak Williams, Parker and August Taylor, Jared, Lauren, and Olivia Kennedy, and baby boy Rencheck on the way.Also surviving are 1 brother, Bob (Anita) Fairchild of Covington, IN; 2 sisters, Susan Misenheimer of Council Grove, KS and Carol (Mike) Powell of Lafayette, IN; brother and sister-in-law Gene (Marilyn) Layton of Danville, IL.

 

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; 3 brothers, Earl Fairchild, Mack Fairchild, and Guy Fairchild; and 2 sisters, Ruth Gurley and Doris Hall.

 

Marie graduated from Covington High School in 1955 and married John Layton on April 8, 1956. John and Marie owned and operated Layton’s Star Market in Williamsport and later Layton’s Custard Corner and produce market in Covington. In her earlier years, she worked at Flexel in Covington and retired as the payroll specialist at SpeedCo in Cayuga, IN.

 

Marie was an avid golfer and was among the earliest members of Big Pine Golf Course. She later golfed in leagues at Harrison Hills Country Club in Attica. They both enjoyed bowling in young couples leagues in Attica. Marie was an exceptional pianist, playing by ear. She loved to travel.

 

Marie enjoyed spending winters in Florida with John at Robinsons Orange Park in Plant City.

 

She was a life-long member of Covington First Assembly of God where she played the piano at every service for many years.

 

Marie was a generous and loving daughter, sister, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many. She loved her family and set a Christian example for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. God’s light shined brightly through her.

 

Arrangements are being handled by Grady Funeral Home in Williamsport. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time at 3:00 p.m. EST with Pastor Bob Fairchild officiating on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Covington First Assembly of God Church, 421 Market St. Covington, IN 47932. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington. Memorial contributions may be made to the Covington First Assembly of God Church.
