Walter Louis Maxwell, age 81 of West Lebanon, IN, passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at OSF Medical Center in Danville, IL.
Walter was born on January 1, 1940 in Indianapolis, IN into the loving home of Lowell and Arline (Potterf) Maxwell. He graduated from West Lebanon High School in 1958 where he played on the basketball and baseball teams. A few days after high school graduation, Walter drove to Washington D.C. to begin employment with the F.B.I. In 1959 “The F.B.I. Story” movie captured him at work in the film and his parents were so proud and Warren County residents flocked to see the film. After a few years with the F.B.I. in Washington D.C. and a few more working for a private investigator in Los Angeles, CA. Walt returned home to begin his nearly 60-year career as a professional truck driver. The last 8 years he drove for Bryant Industries in Danville, IL. He was still driving up until 3 weeks prior to his death. Walter married Josephine Hardy Maxwell on November 2, 1963 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Danville, IL. They were married until 1987. Walt coached many ball teams while raising his children in Westville, IL including several years as the boys basketball coach St. Mary’s grade school in Westville. He was also a skilled farmer, carpenter, and mechanic. Dad always enjoyed his early morning coffee shop visits, the most recent years with his friends at Crossroads Restaurant in Attica, IN.
Walter will be deeply missed by his 3 children, Michelle (Keith) Hartman, Michael (Denise) Maxwell, and Todd Maxwell, all of Westville, IL; grandchildren, Marlee Jo (John) Cappello-Hughes, Kaylee Cappello, Travis (Genesis) Maxwell, Trent Maxwell, and Cole Maxwell; brother, Loren (Sue) Maxwell of South Point, OH; nephews, Kevin Hartman of Westville, IL and Allen (Holly) Maxwell of GA; niece, Debra Burge of OH; many other nieces and nephews; many dear relatives from the Indiana and Ohio area.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents and 2 infant sisters.
Visitation will be at Grady Funeral Home, 111 E. Monroe St., Williamsport, IN on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. EDT (IN time). Graveside services will be at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery near Westville, IL with Father Sauppe officiating on Monday, April 19, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. CDT (IL time).
